W Goscombe John

Gold Painted Plaster Bust by W Goscombe John

Gold painted plaster bust of Male from the 1920s. Life-Size head, fixed to Deco Plaster base. Marked on back "W Goscombe John" . Sir John Goscombe John (1860-1952) was world-renowned Welsh sculptor, especially of large-scale statues, such as 1st Viscount Wolesley on Horse Guards Parade (see Wikipedia entry). We cannot yet trace the subject, but it is clearly a Maquette for a Bronze bust. In correspondence with the National Museum of Wales, we have discovered that the original bronze of this (un-named) subject was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1929, and presented by the Sculptor to the National Museum of Wales in 1947.
